Schools for Schools: Handing over the construction sites

S4S team, general contractors, and school leadership at Layibi S.S. gather to begin work on the renovation of a laboratory and workshop.

Last week, the Schools for Schools (S4S) staff and our Uganda country director, Jolly Okot, signed contracts with the general contractors who will be working on projects at a number of our 11 partner schools.  This week, the team has been traveling to officially hand over the sites to the contractors so that their work can begin!

Yesterday, we visited a number of sites including the 3-block laboratory and workshop at Layibi S.S. and structures devoted to teacher housing at Sir Samuel Baker School.  Both of these projects will be renovation and refurbishment projects - making existing structures operational once again.Once a site is handed over to the general contractor, the work of the S4S team is far from over.  Site Supervisors and Engineers regularly visit the school to make sure that the work is on schedule and of good quality.

Our Schools for Schools program was developed in 2006 with the aim of raising the standard of secondary education.  To accomplish this, Invisible Children is currently working with 11 partner secondary schools in northern Uganda, providing software (teacher training and capacity building) and hardware (construction and renovation of structure and facilities) initiatives.

Look for more updates on the progress of this round of construction!
