I asked my good friend Caroline Borolla from Terrorbird Publicity to make a mix because she always turns me on to new tunes. Here’s what she came up with. Love yas… Kenny Happy Monday everyone! I’m Caroline and I’m your guest curator for this week’s Monday Mini Mix. I’m a long time supporter of IC and I’m excited to share this week’s mix with you! Over the last five years Kenny, Alex, Nada and I have exchanged numerous CDs, MP3s and video links. We’re constantly sharing new music. I’m so grateful to have discovered some of my favorite songs and bands because of them. A few weeks ago Kenny and I saw one of our favorite LA bands, Haim perform at The Bootleg Theater. Kenny live-tweeted (yep, we’re those people) about the amazing show and used the hashtag #ladyshredders and thus the inspiration for this mix was born! This not-so-mini mix features some of favorite lady shredders. Some will completely rock you while others are a bit more reserved, but are equally compelling. I hope you enjoy this mix and discover something new. Share it with your friends and please support the artists that you love so that they can continue making wonderful songs for us to enjoy. -CB We’ve provided links so that you can support these wonderful artists. Grab their full albums and keep the good vibes good. MONDAY MINI MIXTAPE #5: Ladyshredders Ume “Captive” - Ume superbly blends together the best elements of Sonic Youth, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Metric. Can’t get enough. Tegan And Sara “The Con” – Tegan and Sara are one of those bands that never disappoint. “The Con” is easily one of my favorite jams from these twin sisters. The Breeders “No Aloha” – For this mix I had a hard time deciding between The Pixies and The Breeders and well, Team Breeders is it! There are so many reasons to love this song, but I’m a sucker for its slow-mo intro with trebly guitars, Kim Deal’s reverbed vocals and its punky second half. Haim “Forever” – The sisters from LA that inspired this mix! Expect big things from this band in 2012! Wild Flag “Romance” – You can’t go wrong with 2/3 Sleater-Kinney + 1 part Helium + 1 part The Minders! See these ladies live if you can! Des Ark “No More Fighting Cats, OK?” – One of my favorite songs from a ferociously beautiful record that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. Marnie Stern “For Ash” – The ULTIMATE Lady Shredder. Don’t even think of creating a ladies mix without a lil Marnie Stern! Thao & Mirah “Eleven” – Thao & Mirah teamed up last year created of the best records of 2011. tUnE-yaRds collaborated with Thao & Mirah on this standout track. Magnapop “Slowly Slowly” – This song makes me think of being 13-years-old, staying up late to watch 120 on MTV. Total 90’s jam. Mount Moriah “Lament” – Chapel Hill’s Mount Moriah successfully mixes alt-country and rock with punk impulses. “Lament” is a track that demands attention. Sucre “When We Were Young” – Stacy King (Eisley), her husband Darren (Mute Math) along with musician Jeremy Larson create beautifully orchestrated pop songs with melodies that will remain in your head long after the song is finished. Can’t wait for their debut album in April! Maria Taylor “Song Beneath Song” – One of my favorite song’s from Maria Taylor’s debut solo album. I dare you to not sing along with the chorus, “it’s not a love, it’s not a love, it’s not a love song…”
