Mercy Southam, one of the LRA Crisis Tracker Project Developers in our San Diego headquarters, is compiling weekly reports based on data generated from IC’s Early Warning Radio Network, the UN, and organizations on the ground. She will be breaking down the information and highlighting specified activity in the weekly blog post, On The Radar. For real- time updates on LRA attacks, check out LRA Crisis Tracker online, or follow us on Twitter @CrisisTracker.
The month of May held the fewest total LRA incidents thus far in 2012. The following are a few notable incidents and numbers from May 2012. This information was compiled from the LRA Crisis Tracker dataset.
May 2012 was a historic month in the efforts to end the LRA’s threat to civilians in central Africa. On May 12 2012, the Ugandan army safely apprehended LRA top commander Ceasar Achellam as he was traveling along the Mbomou River in Central African Republic. Achellam was with his Ugandan wife, their young child and a teenage girl.
This month, there were a total of 14 reported abductions. Of those, 12 were short term abductions, meaning that the abductees were only in captivity for less than 72 hours.
Further to that, there were 16 reported returnees this month. This number represents the return of the 12 short term abductions, plus the peaceful surrender of 2 LRA combatants to Central African security forces, and the escape of 2 young girls, including a 14-year-old girl who had been in captivity for 5 months.
OTHER NOTABLE REPORTS:
On May 30 2012, near Niangara, DRC, suspected LRA forces killed a teenage girl, injured a 4-year-old child, and abducted 2 young boys. The assailants also looted a total of 30 households in the area, and fired 2 warning shots as they left the community.
On May 15 2012, a suspected LRA member, dressed in civilian clothing, was apprehended by security forces along the Dungu-Faradje Road, DRC, after he was seen acting bizarrely and asking community members about recent food distribution. The scout reportedly then led the security forces into the forest to look for the group he had come from. No further information was reported.
