KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Ugandan forces captured a senior commander of Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army after a brief fight with rebels near the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic, an army official said Sunday, in what an analyst said was an “intelligence coup” for the forces hunting for Mr. Kony.

Yesterday President Obama announced the extended deployment of U.S. Advisers in the LRA-affected areas:

“Today I can announce that our advisers will continue their efforts to bring this madman to justice and to save lives. It’s part of our regional strategy to end the scourge that is the LRA and help realize a future where no African child is stolen from their family and no girl is raped and no boy is turned into a child soldier.”

In February of 2012, Invisible Children spoke with a 19-year old former LRA abductee* in the Central African Republic AR who was forced to become one of Joseph Kony’s 40+ wives at the age of 16. She explained how the combination of FM radio broadcasts and defection leaflets gave her the courage to finally escape, more than three years after she was abducted by the LRA. This story highlights the importance of the Demobilization, Disarmament, and Reintegration (DDR) process and the need to expand efforts that promote peaceful surrender of LRA members.
